Image - illustration of a fat babe in undies with rollers in their hair and a cigarette hanging out of their mouth which is streaming smoke that says “Ugly + don’t care”.
Ok now I really need to give my wrist a rest!! I’ll be going to mum’s for the next week so maybe I’ll do more drawing there, we’ll see.
(Prints and shirts)

I’ve thought about this photo for a while and why it bugs me. If you’ve read my posts you’d know that I often refer to myself as ugly and have no issues with that term. This photo reaches to something deeper though.
I don’t really like a white artist drawing brown and black bodies and calling them ugly. I also don’t like that this photo is then used to sell the artists merchandise.
There is so little art of fat bodies of color that I’ve found actually done by poc that this one with hella notes is one where the body is deemed ugly and is for by a white women. Again, ugly is not bad, but some people will not understand the complexities of ownership for some folx of that word.
I know the artist meant no harm in drawing this and aims to show a spectrum but it still perturbs me in lots of ways I can and can’t describe.

the bolded encapsulates what is currently my qualm w it too upon learning its drawn by a white person. :|
the fuck you is, calling us ugly. that aint showin the man a damn thing. its affirming what we are told everyday more than anyone else, by the likes of you, for centuries.
no white person in all their privilege can in good conscious do this shit, and profit off it on top of that. and you are especially not in a position to tell me this shit is “empowering”. when youre considered all thats lovely and holy.
the fuck outta here.
no.

ughhhhh so many things wrong with this

HOLY SHIT YOU GUYS THIS IS NOT A FUCKING BIG DEAL
I’M 110% SURE THAT THIS ARTIST WAS NOT TARGETTING POC
CALM THE FUCK DOWN OH MY GOD

okay everyone just take a breather. there’s a lot of ways to go about talking about this, because it’s clearly a very sensitive subject. I don’t have too much time to write on my hands right now, but I’ll say a bit.The fact that a white person drew this really shouldn’t be such a big deal. There are so many pictures of people out there with this same sort of message. I mean, just look at the TV show “ugly betty” (though america ferrera is far from ugly,) she’s a white girl who is far more in the media than this image, and is called “ugly” everywhere, even in the title of the show.  White artists (hell, artists of all races) try to make this same point. When it’s a white woman, it’s fine, but when it’s a woman of color, people get defensive.Seriously, I get it, no one wants to be called ugly, but she’s not “ugly” because she’s a poc, that’s just the color of her skin. What is highlighted in the image are her hairy legs, tattoos, stretch marks, and other things that today’s society deems “ugly”. What I’m trying to say is that, I don’t know if race would be so much of an issue if people didn’t change the meaning of things whenever a person of color is involved. If you just looked at this, and didn’t care about what color she is, the message of this picture would be a positive one. But because society today is so sensitive, and we care so much about political correctness and what the artist “might” be trying to say through the person’s color, this image is given a negative message. I mean, since when is trying to include different races in your art racist? It’d be better if we could just ignore skin color and get on with our lives, because really, it doesn’t matter.

blah blah im not the one harmed but let me tell you in all my privileged, racist, ignorant arrogance how to feel about just another one in a list of historical offenses against YOU. clearly your own lives arent for you to gauge. let me in all my actual privileged rationality, help you analyze what is important and relevent to YOUR plight, from the peanut gallery.
do you people all read from some manual? theyre like drones, i swear.

Mierda!
I didn’t know this was made by a white person. That’s definitely fucked up.

Gee, idk I guess, as a WOC, my issue would be is i have seen the sibling images to this one and I don’t see them being called ugly. I see them being called BABES. So maybe it wasn’t a conscious decision, but associating one of the only POC in this line of imagery to the word ugly. Like, maybe create a white person and say ugly and don’t care. Then I think some of the people trying to rationalize this image would be very quick to say “but she isn’t ugly!!!”

^^^^ Yes!!!!!!
THANK YOU, QUE LOLA AND PEEPS FOR SAYING WHAT NEEDS TO BE SAID.
